As you get started on this challenge, I have a few things to ask of you...
1. Head over to my Facebook Group and introduce yourself!! This is where you can post your work and receive feedback from fellow artists, and be part of the really lovely community we are creating — home to 5,000+ like-minded artists plus fellow Creative Color Challenge participants.
2. You should have received a welcome email from me with important course information, so please check your spam. I totally understand that some of you might not want to share your emails...and that is OK!! But I want to assure you that I wont share your emails with anyone else, I make every effort make my emails meaningful, and of course, you are always welcome to change this setting after the challenge is over.

The Psychology of Color
Welcome to the 'Creative Color Challenge' course! In this lesson, we will explore the fascinating topic of the psychology of color. Colors have a profound impact on our emotions, behaviors, and perceptions. Understanding the psychology behind colors can help you create more engaging and effective learning content.
Colors can evoke different emotions and associations in individuals. For example, warm colors like red and orange are often associated with energy and passion, while cool colors like blue and green are calming and soothing. It's important to consider the cultural and personal associations people may have with different colors when designing learning materials.
In conclusion, the psychology of color plays a crucial role in how we perceive and interact with the world around us. By incorporating the right colors into your learning content, you can create a more engaging and impactful experience for your audience. Because colors are so personal, I have not suggested a specific set of colors. This mini course is about you beginning to explore colors that speak to YOU and your creative spirit, so I will be giving you the tools to use the colors that speak to you in a way that enhances your own art practice.
How to Use This Course
Welcome to the 'Creative Color Challenge' course! Abstract art allows for endless possibilities. I have outlined four different projects for you to begin to see how to use color more effectively and in a very personal way in your own artwork. The lessons are not necessarily intended for you to complete your next masterpiece, but instead I like to think of them as a place to explore and grow as an artists. Take these ideas and run with them..see where they lead you in your own artwork!!
Once you have done any of the lessons please remember to head on over to the Facebook group and post your images for all of us to see:)
As you experiment with these ideas on your own, it's important to let go of any preconceived notions of what art 'should' look like. Instead, focus on experimenting with different shapes, lines, and colors to create unique and visually appealing compositions. Feel free to use my demos as a step by step process to create a similar piece of art as I have in the examples…or use it as a jumping off point for your next artistic creation. If you do use my work as a jumping off point of what you would like to create on your own, please be sure to tag me so I can see it out in the virtual world:)
By embracing the freedom that abstract art offers, you can push the boundaries of traditional art and create truly unique pieces. Remember to have fun and experiment with different color combinations to see what works best for your artistic vision.
- Let go of preconceived notions and embrace experimentation
- Abstract art offers freedom and creativity to push artistic boundaries
Day One: Using Complementary Colors to Achieve Harmony
Introduction
Welcome to Day One of the challenge!!
I am so happy you are here.
Each day, we’ll use color to connect back to what inspires you, what matters most in your art and your life. While you craft personal art, I’ll help you use color in a way that is meaningful, powerful, connected.
I know so many of you signed up to begin to understand the power of color and use it in your work so that you feel more connected to both your art and to others as a form of communication. I am here to tell you that today is the day to begin...and wouldn’t it be amazing to see the colors unfold in front of you that felt so powerful, so inspiring...where communicating your thoughts on the canvas felt so EASY?
Are you ready?!
- TODAY’S THEME: Using complimentary colors, or opposites in order to achieve harmony
- YOUR CREATIVE QUESTION: “How do I incorporate opposites or complementary colors, in my work (and yes perhaps in my life) to create meaningful moments in my artwork?”
STEP 1: Think about opposites both on and off the canvas as you allow the colors to wildly unfold.
Your best art will always come from following your own intuition as we explore some ”rules" and I encourage you to listen to what YOU find beautiful within that framework..
Ask yourself….
How do I want color to influence and enhance my work in the future?
What is stopping me from following my intuition on what I find beautiful, meaningful?
STEP 2: Hop on over to our facebook group and share your thoughts and your art!
Day One: Part One
Here I guide you step by step to create a piece of abstract art using complementary colors.
Allow yourself to use this time to create freely without worrying about the end product. Remember you can use this technique in future artwork. The idea is to understand the concept and master the skill, so that you can apply it both now and in the future.
Day One: Part Two
Day Two: The Power of Neutrals
Day Two Instructional Video
Wow! The brilliance of each of you has been the vivaciousness of color in my world!! I have been completely overjoyed by the incredible work and meaningful thoughts everyone has shared so far. It’s amazing to watch people already getting a clearer sense of how to move forward in their creative journey!
TODAY’S THEME: The Power of Neutrals
YOUR CREATIVE QUESTION: How and why is it important for the neutrals to be there in order to anchor the excitement? Think about your artwork as a grand adventure, a symphony, or a broadway musical production...There are so many supporting actors and actresses...how can they work in harmony to support the highlight of the journey, the “star” of the production?
STEP 1: As a creative person, you are likely excited by visual possibilities. Lets really allow this journey to unfold and incorporate important places of rest along the way.
One of the ideas we’ll return to through the challenge is the importance of allowing our artwork to unfold like a fantastic journey. A common theme is finding places of rest along the way that soothe your soul. That is s the power of a well placed and an artfully crafted neutral.
Bonus Expansion Question:
What is my favorite kind of journey, on or off the canvas? Is it planned or spontaneous?
What do the places of rest along the way offer for my own growth and enjoyment?
STEP 2: SHARE YOUR INSIGHTS and your artwork in the Facebook Group
I am so happy and honored to be on this journey together!!
Day Three: Movement
Day Three Instructional Video
We are on day 3 of our Creative Color Challenge... and I am seeing more and more progress, excitement, and power in your work and use of color every day!
So far we learned about complementary colors, neutrals, and today we turn to warm and cool colors to navigate around space in your work.
Our journey continues…
TODAY’S THEME: Movement
YOUR CREATIVE QUESTION: “Think about movement in your painting and movement in your life.” As you work your way around the canvas with color as your guide, how does movement on the canvas mimic these thoughts in your life? What are you drawn towards in the future and how can you use the feeling of warmth to draw these things closer to you?
My guess is you are here because you are drawn to more connection and more creativity. And that stepping into this challenge has helped you begin to use some tools to really feel the movement towards more conenction through your own creativity.
STEP 1: For better or worse, there is a beautiful connection that exists between our art and our lives.
Think about: “What are the parts of my life that have warmth, that draw me in, and connect me to my creativity?’ How is strength and courage in my art connected to strength in my own life?
STEP 2: SHARE YOUR INSIGHTS and your art
Day Four: Build Upon the Positive and Make Your Colors POP
Day Four Instructional Video
Day 4: Finding your inner compass and moving towards growth
Today is the day we’ll complete the final section of your creative color challenge… and it’s the most important piece of all.
It marks both the end of this challenge… and a launch towards even greater creativity
Something special is coming your way today.
Let’s embrace that together!
TODAY’S THEME: Build upon the positive and make your colors POP
YOUR CREATIVE QUESTION: “How can I accentuate MORE of what I love?”
How can I build a habit of creativity, playfulness and possibilities so that my artwork FLOURISHES?
Today, lets harness the energy of color, and learn to use that energy, and skills from the week, to keep your creative practice going in the direction you guide it:)
STEP 1:
Ask yourself:
If I followed my dreams, what would my art and life feel like?
What supporting characters (real or imagined) would haveI have alongside me in my wild, wonderful creative and colorful journey?
STEP 2: SHARE YOUR INSIGHTS
I'd love to hear from you in the Facebook Group as you look back at everything you’ve created this week. I hope you feel more connected to the images that speak to your soul..
I’ll be putting everything together to give you a clear sense of the next steps in your creative journey, and be there to offer support as one of YOUR supporting cast members on your creative journey:).
Lisa
P.S. Be on the lookout for a surprise from me in the next day...I have some ideas on how I can support your journey, how to keep your connection to your artistic self, and your own creativity going.

This class has been such an absolute pleasure!!!! Id love to keep painting together;)
Keep your eyes peeled in the facebook group and in your inbox for upcoming opportunities for deep dives into abstract art together:)
Ohhhh geee, I am gushing with pride;) Wonder what past students have to say?
“My class with Lisa has just been amazing! In addition to meeting with us each week on Zoom calls she has been a constant support on Facebook and/or email whether it was for critique or help in re-working our paintings or really any assistance at all. She is always encouraging, supportive and such a lovely, calming and fun presence! She has taught us so many skills in oil and cold wax, acrylics, color composition, techniques, methods for creating interest, etc. that I know I will continue to refer to these lessons quite often. Not only will you NOT be disappointed in a class you take with her, you will find her instruction and inspiration as a basis for all the continued artwork you will create! I am including a few of the pictures I have done in the class so far. In two of them I have used Lisa's suggestions in her videos she creates for our own work.
Thank you again Lisa for all you have taught me!”

From this first image to the second...students learn how to take their ideas and allow them to emerge in a powerful way using solid artistic tools and Lisa's support and guidance.
However we stay in touch and whatever form that takes....don't be a stranger- it was really lovely to connect and share in this journey with you all!!
Student work BEFORE our class together:

Student work AFTER our class together

Color is just one of many aspects of creating beautiful and successful artwork. Composition is another really important aspect to creating stunning art that keeps your viewers engaged. Using color theory AND compositional tools is how Angela transformed her art above. Here is a small instructional tool that I often use in my classes to help them improve and expand upon their composition. It is a page from the sketchbook of artist Edgar Payne. I am including it here for you to look at and think about how you can incorporate these ideas into practice. If you’d like more information on exactly how I do this, please be sure to let me know in the FB group that you are interested, and be on the lookout in your inbox in the next few days for more information!!
