Oil and Cold Wax Painting: An intuitive and playful approach to creating stunning abstract scenes

The Process:

Cold wax medium is a paste of beeswax and a small amount of solvent. It has a soft, butter-like consistency. By adding the cold wax paste to oil paints, I am able to work in layers to add textures, lines and form. The wax allows for some transparency of the colors and for the different layers to show through, adding depth to the painting. Like a story being written-layer upon layer- a painting is created, and then selectively scraped back to reveal pieces of its past. Each piece is totally unique, and sometimes a piece of art can have over 30 layers. The process involves revealing parts of certain layers, and concealing other parts, and slowly the paints  and the composition begin to tell a story- that is where the magic happens!

The process and materials are similar that which was used by ancient greeks when making and preserving art.

Curious exactly how I do this? Painting with oil and cold wax opened up a whole new world when I discovered how exactly to use it. For me, it required a deft touch, lots and lots of experimentation, and finding the rare instructors I could find that were also using this material. It is indeed something that needs to be felt and watched in order to master it. So, seeing as using wax in paintings originated in Greece thousands of years ago ( this is where “encuastics” was born), want to join me in the birth place of this technique on a glorious greek island retreat in my home studio? I’ll show you exactly how to use this material and get these wonderful ethereal looks with your paintings.

If travelling to Greece isn’t an option, check out my online classes for visuals and step by step instructions.
